Unlike the other rulers who built castles, walls, and gates for defensive reasons, Ludwig had it built so that he gets to enjoy the picturesque view from its top and to retreat away from public life.

He was shy, romantic, and peaceful by nature. He was, however, declared as mentally unfit to rule shortly after he moved into the castle, which was still in the making. Things got worse when he was found dead in a lake two days after the declaration in 1892. His death remains a mystery till date.

Just a few minutes away is another castle named Hohenschwangau Castle. This was constructed by his father and was home to Ludwig until he built the Neuschwanstein Castle near it.
